Key Facts
When to visit
For most families, the sweet spot is November to April. That is the drier season on the Andaman side, with the most reliable beach and boat weather
How to get there
The easiest way is to fly into Krabi International Airport. From there, most families head to Ao Nang, Klong Muang, Tubkaek, or Krabi Town by road, and then use boats for places like Railay. Airport transport options commonly include private taxis, shared minivans, buses and rental cars
How to get around
This is where people often get caught out. Krabi is not one neat little walkable town. It is a region with different bases, and getting around depends heavily on where you stay. Ao Nang is the easiest first base.

Best Things To Do in Krabi
- Do a Railay day, even if you do not stay there, Railay is one of the signature Krabi experience. It’s super easy to catch a long tail boat there from Ao Nang beach. Head to the boat pier next door to Reeve Beach Club.
- Take one island boat trip, not five. A lot of the tours will offer full-day experiences across multiple lands, which makes it a long day. We hired our own long tail boat from Ao Nang beach, and were able to take our own pace, leave islands when we had had enough. We liked Hong Island and Chicken Island. For families, I’d choose one good island day rather than trying to tick every island tour. That gives you the fun without making the trip feel like a full-time transfer schedule.
- Emerald Pool and hot springs is a good day out. This is a good change-up from beach days if your family wants a nature day inland.
- Skip the Tiger Cave summit with most younger kids. The summit climb is famous for being tough. In Krabi heat, that is not a breezy family outing for most kids. We ended up skipping the walk to the top – it was tough in the heat so if you want to visit it, go early in the morning!
- Ao Thalane. This is the most famous kayaking area in Krabi and for good reason for its winding mangrove tunnels and tunnels. The water here is very calm and sheltered, which is why it’s considered one of the easiest kayaking areas for families
Best Beaches & Hotels in Krabi
For most first-time families, Ao Nang is the easiest and smartest pick. It works well because it offers the easiest access from the airport, loads of restaurants, convenient transport options, easy longtail access to Railay, and practicality for families who want beach, food, and convenience in one place. However, it may not suit everyone as it can be busier, parts of it feel touristy, and the main beach is more about location and boat access than being the dreamiest swim beach in Thailand. That is the honest truth. Ao Nang is not the prettiest beach base in Thailand, but it is the most practical one.
Railay is a visually stunning destination that captures the hearts of many. Families are drawn to Railay for its breathtaking scenery, lack of road traffic, and a special, memorable holiday vibe, with beaches just a stone’s throw away. However, some aspects are often overlooked. The journey to Railay isn’t the simplest, as it involves traveling by boat, which can make moving luggage a hassle. Additionally, day-trippers can crowd the area, and while the beauty of Railay is undeniable, the effort it takes can be significant, especially with younger kids, strollers, or a lot of bags. Overall, Railay is amazing, but it may not be the most effortless choice for families.
We stayed at the L Resort, which sits directly across from Ao Nang Beach, but it’s right in the heart of the street. We had a family room facing the street, which was slightly noisy at night; however, we liked walking out and having everything on our doorstep. Other options are the Holiday Ao Nang Beach Resort, which is one of the stronger family picks in Ao Nang if you want a resort feel without giving up location. Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort is good if you want a quieter beach resort stay away from Ao Nang’s busier strip, but it’s further away.
